Hello, I am a novice woodworker, and could use some help. I have purchased some purple heart stock for a small project. After jointing, sawing and sanding I have lost the nice purple tone and now have a brownish tone when I apply my clear poly finish. Can anyone tell me what I have done wrong. Have I burnt the grain, or have I missed a step.
Thanks GaryC [email protected]

Try putting it in the sun for a few hours. The purpleheart I use brightens right up when exposed to sunlight.
I've also seen some that after time (years) turns to a very plain dark brown too.
also do a search here on purpleheart, there have been lots of discussions about it.
good luck, Hugh
Hello, Thanks for the info. Not intensionally I placed my project peices next to my sliding glass door, and to my suprise some of the color came back. However, until now I did not know that. Thanks again

Try rubbing the project out with mineral oil. I don't know if this is something that is recomended. but being a cheap person I bought some Mineral oil at the pharmacy and used it to finish a project. I then put a polyureathane finish over it and the result was beautiful.
