I’m making a jewlery box out of purple heart. Any suggestions as to what would be a good finish. I was told that two coats of tung oil sanded with steel wool in between coats would work??

I finished a jewelery box for my wife in a basic brushing varnish. A couple of coats of tung oil (varnish) would give you a very close to the grain finish, in other words, it would not produce a surface film. It's perfectly acceptable if that is the look you like.
I would suggest you don't use steel wool between coats ordinarily, but for something like this it won't hurt. Steel wool will not "sand" the previous coat, sandpaper will.
The tung oil you plan on using is a varnish that is very low in solids. That is why you get the oiled look without a surface build. Whatever you do, don't apply oil to the inside of the box. Either leave it raw of give it a light coat of shellac.
Sorry for the delay, my computer was down.

thanks for the suggestion. what i want to do is show off the wood, not to stain it. hopefully tung oil will do that for me unless you have a better suggestion. otherwise thanks again.
