Folks
No, I’m not offering this for sale, so this is not a sales post. Just a head’s up on an interesting development in the field of antique tools.
Roger Smith has engaged me to digitize Volume 1 of Patented Transitional and Metallic Planes in America (PTAMPIA). His intent is to sell the digital version of Volume 1 along with the print version of Volume 2 as a set. Volume 1 has been long out of print and won’t be printed again. Volume 2 won’t be printed again either. Whatever copies Roger has on hand will be it.
Roger is also working on a 2010 calendar that will feature new information on patented metallic planes.
As for me, I’m having an interesting experience working with the bane of all imaging: pages containing text, color, grayscale and photographic reproductions. Sort of like balancing a pile of plates on your head while riding a unicycle. But the end result is really looking good.
My biggest problem is making myself move along with the project instead of stopping and re-reading the book.
When all is ready, Roger will announce the price and availability. I’m sure I’ll be blogging something about it when the time comes.

"Roger will announce the price and availability." Gary, what's the best way to be sure and receive the announcement when it comes?? I didn't see an obvious way on his web site.
For now, I'll post a notice through both my blog and website. I'm giving Roger a hand in this as I am thrilled to see this book back in some sort of publication. He does have a rudimentary website, but like a lot of people, explaining RSS and blogs and feeds is a bit too much. It's easier to just handle the announcements as a friendly service. When the time comes Roger will add some sort of purchase mechanism on his site. I'll simply link to it. Garyhttp://toolemera.com
Gary, for those of us who barely have tiime to browse Knots and check our email, might I suggest an email list of people who'd like to be notified when the time comes? Just a thought...........forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
While that sounds reasonable on the surface, in fact, I'm not acting as an agent for Roger. I'm just doing the production of the digital file and CD. It's up to Roger how he wants to publicize the set when it's ready. I'll recommend to him an email list of some sort. An alternative is simply to subscribe to the RSS feed from my blog. Roger has agreed to allow me to discuss the project as it progresses, particularly as his site is barebones. I've found it to be counter-productive to try and explain RSS feeds, blogs and the like to people who are not all that comfortable using email. About half of my correspondence with Roger is plain old letter writing or the phone.http://toolemera.com
MMmmmmm, I've been resisting RSS feeds myself, as my brain just creaks at the thought, but now our NPR station is notifying people that way, so I'll take a deep breath and get 'er done! Thanks!
