Is it OK to discuss the performance of specific products by name and do a competitive analysis on this forum?
Obviously some negative comments about specific products will be made.

Gosh, i'd hope so.
For me, that seems like a big part of what these places are for.
It happens all the time -- people praise or complain about specific products. We really don't see more formal reviews of products though. I also believe there's a line between what we usually see and what is essentially spam.
Look for any posts having to do with Sawstop, serious fanboy vs. hater action there!
This is a place for you, the forum users, to be heard... so... ya!
Should we welcome overtly bashing a company? No, of course not, but I think places like this are exactly the place for being heard.
Sometimes manufacturers or company representatives come to the forum to add to (or maybe defend) their products. That is welcome, as long as any relationships to the company or products are disclosed.
Be respectful, be honest, and be open to the opinions of others and I don't foresee any problems.
I'd say the forums are VERY friendly to products and manufacturers. All too often the solutions offered are more product based rather than method based. "Buy this" seems to be used more than "do this" or "make this". It's almost like some people are sponsored.
