Hi, folks. I’m doing a nationwide spot-check on lumberyard prices for red oak and white oak. If any of you have checked locally lately, I was wondering how much each is selling for, per board foot. It probably would be listed as 4/4 (“by 12” would be understood.) Actually, I’m after two prices each — flatsawn and quarter-sawn, red oak and white oak. I would appreciate any and all info. Thanks.

Charlieteina,
I don't buy from lumberyards, I can't afford the mark-up..
I buy from sawmills.
White oak is remaining steady at 80 cents a bd.ft. for FAS quality, they don't charge a premium for 1/4 sawn boards when I select them out.
Red oak has been dropping, right now it's $1.00 a bd.ft. for FAS no sense in 1/4 sawing red oak.
Thanks, Frenchie. Where, or in what part of the country, do you live?
Charlie,
I'm in Minnesota Just west of the twin cities. The sawmill I use most often is Johnson logging in Cannon Falls Minnesota..
Frenchy,
Thanks for the info on Johnson Logging.
Is that price green, air dried....
Do they have price lists available via fax?
You wouldn't happen to live near Excelsior would you? We might be neighbors. (Don't worry, I won't be asking to borrow any tools.) ;-)
Bill
bill5335,
Yes I am near Excelsior. In Orono on Casco Point, in fact. maybe 7 minutes away.. Stop over some time, check out my progress..
Johnson sells rough and green at the mill, I air dry things myself and have all the stuff it takes to make rough boards smooth etc.. stop by and chat and use the equipment if you want to.. I drive down there and buy stuff all the time. Let me know what you'd like, I'll add it to my purchases.
Quartersawn white oak is running $4.70/bf for 100bf+ at Wall's.

Charlie,
You 'll be better off getting a cpy of the market report, it lists prices for Northern, Southern and Appalachian lumber, both green and KD.
Or you could ask Rocco when he comes to see you.

Doorboy:I heard there was a good hardwood supply house in MCKinney, but have not been there. Do you know anything about it?Joe
Joe,
I'm aware of a place called Curlywoods in McKinney. I have been to their website: http://www.curlywoods.com before and it does look good. However, as I write this, I can't get the site to come up. I hope that's not a bad sign.

I have ordered 1/4 sawn white oak several times from Curly Woods and had good luck. Twice in the last 3 months I called and they were "out". Same with walnut. Ordering wood over the phone there is a trust factor like shooting craps with some one over the phone and I never had a complaint with them. Nice people and I would hate to see them go.
Texmark,
I'm slow to respond, but Curlywoods IS open, although they did change their hours of operation. Anyway, they advertize 4/4 QSWO at $5.50 bf."She wrote a long letter, on a short piece of paper."
Curlywoods shut down as of July 2. Too bad, good reliable service.
Sorry to hear about Curlywoods. I guess we'll have to go on another quest for a good local supplier."She wrote a long letter, on a short piece of paper." Traveling Wilburys
Located in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. I get my red oak from a hardwood dist. and I am currently paying 2.25 a bd. ft.
mark
In SE Michigan Red Oak is 2.19 for sel&bet 3.96 for qt.sawn. White oak is 2.84 sel&bet, 4.95 for qt.sawn. Those are prices for 100' or less usually knock off a buck for larger quantities. All prices are 4/4 KD.

You and me both! West Elizabeth Lumber has some WO on occasion, but usually not much. Presently, they have less than 100 bd ft. Probably pretty well picked over, so I'm not even going to bother with them. I've never seen QS WO at West Elizabeth, but they may sometimes have a few pieces in the showroom bins. My sawmill doesn't carry WO -- says it's too much trouble to work with. (I don't know what he's talking about. Never had any problems with it.)
Babcock might have some -- never tried there. I'm taking a trip down to WV this weekend 'cause I need a few hundred BF of WO and that's the closest place I could find with a decent amount of stock. Quoted prices range from $3 to $3.85 depending on cut and grade. It's all rough and I'll just have to see about the quality. Should be OK though. The guy seemed knowledgable, and he's right in the heart of WO country.

Where in WV do you go to get white Oak?

There's a guy who sells rough sawn stock just a bit east of Bruceton Mills just off Rte. 68. Nice guy, nice wood supply. Hazelton Woodworks. I found him on Woodfinder.com.

Interesting that you would start a thread like this without starting out by giving the price that you are paying, and not even hinting at where you are located.
All you have to do is click on your own name, then click change profile. I assume that you don't know this, since you ask frenchy where he is. If you had started the question by stating your location. Someone maybe ten miles away might could respond with an answer that could save you a buck a foot, but you will never know until you give it a chance to work.
But maybe you just want to collect information that may change next week.
I believe Charlie stated that he was doing a nationwide spot check on prices............

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
In Boise the crappiest red oak, not worth using is going for $3 retail with prices going up to $7 depending on grain orientation and thickness.
Even for something like oak, asking for the price is like asking for the price of a used car since there are varieties of red oak (from oregon?) that are soft and hardly worth using. Also, it's not clear if you have asked for s2s, rough, s4s, hit or miss dimensions, etc.
