Hey All, I just completed my first built-in cabinets. I usually make furniture. I am NOT a professional. These folks trusted me with the design and, well, you can see how it turned out. I purchased, built and installed these units. I did NOT paint them. The materials were baltic birch and poplar. 22 sheets of plywood. I didn’t count the BF of poplar. The shelves are all adjustable. The drawers are all full extension. I purchased the rosettes. Total LF of cabinets was 24 ft. I had a blast figuring these things out and NOW appreciate how tough the installation can be. There were a total of 4 “pieces” that were built. The first was a low cabinet that is 7 ft long. Then three pieces that were joined together. The tall pieces are 7 ft tall. I have a small 2 car garage and a 2.7hp table saw. And lots of patience. So, I live in Houston and would appreciate a ballpark guestimate. I’ve already been paid and I won’t be the least unhappy no matter what you say the job is worth. Speaking of ballparks ……. how about them Astros!!!!! Bob |

$13,200 .
That's a guess that material costs were $1.320.00 X10 = $13,200.
Multipliers like that are what I know as quick as a flash 'down and dirty' estimating.
Another estimating method I used to use sometimes to get me in the right sort of area when I lived in Houston was to multiply linear feet by $600 for entry level stain grade work, so 24lf X $600 = $14,400. I did polish quality built in work that sometimes came in at $1,500 a linear foot or more. It depended on the job and the particular requirements.
A multiplier for high quality paint grade work often suggested used to be (back in 2003 just before I left Houston) linear feet X $400, therefore 24 X $400 = $9,600.
All the rather arbitrary and often almost meaningless figures suggested above were for construction and polishing (or painting) off-site with later installation and would all have been possibly subject 8.25% sales tax added on top.
The rather different on site building type of construction using a gang of cabinetbuilders with tools out of the back of a truck were subject to a different set of pricing criteria, usually with somewhat lower quality expectations. Slainte.

Without actually running numbers I'd go with Siggy's thirteen grand number with installation on top of that and possibly another add on for the crown.
Just guesses, I'll do ballparks for free, bids cost money.

You and me both Lee. Off-the-top-of-the-head quick-as-flash figures cost the punter nowt, and generating the figures costs me almost no brain ache or time either.
Ask me to design it and price it properly and the meter starts running.
Consultancy rates i charge nowadays at £60 per hour, which isn't too bad a rate to work at really, ha, ha. Slainte.Richard Jones Furniture
I'm sitting here booking a flight to Tampa and for jollies I stuck Edinburg in as a destination. $250 more than Tampa, jeez.Sgian, my good friend, I might darken your doorway someday soon.Lee
Lee, what are you doing heading to our part of the deep South?
So I'm wondering what you actually got paid for them now that you have a few estimates???

I'll be at the Woodworks show as a demonstrator. I'll be demonstrating ornamental carving for furniture. It's a great venue for me, one on one and small group stuff, I'm quite excited about it. I'll also be teaching seminars in Ft. Washington, PA in December, one about carving fundamentals, another about designing to embellish furniture and cabinetry.Stop by and introduce yourself.http://www.woodworksevents.com/tampa.shtmlLee
Absolutely! Can you tell me what the dates are?
Creekwood, follow the link in my previous post for dates and times.Lee
Thank you, Lee, already did that. Sorry, I went brain dead for a moment, and forgot I could look things up.
Planning on seeing you there.

Where've you been????? It's good to hear you're keeping busy (lol)!! Just thought you should know that I was in Las Vegas all last week (got home last night), and found a bar that served Deer Slayer AND Phat Tyre. I was in heaven, and thinking about you!!
Take it easy, and if you get through Chicago in your travels, give me a shout first. My treat to a few of the locally brewed Ales.
See ya.
Jeff
BTW I'm putting my res. in for Montanafest II.
Hey Jeff. So, you blame me for this beer thing, huh? I think it was in place long before we met, Hah, hah, ha.... Ruthie and I ran the numbers and we have set up a fridge with a keg in the garage recently. done right it's cheaper than bottled micros and on tap it's Sooooo much better. We just finished an Alaskan Amber and I'm picking up a Trout Slayer this afternoon, it works out to $.80 per 12 oz serving. You'll have to take the drive out sometime when we're working on a Moose Drool. In my learned opinion it's the best beer ever made.Yup, things are busy, it keeps me off the streets. Chicago is a town I'd like to spend some time in, the ACC show there was next on my list back in the days I did shows to hawk my wares but never got around to it. It appears I need another excuse to get to your bailiwick and if I head that way you can be sure I'll give you a holler.Lee
If the doors, trim and crown are off the shelf then materials estimate is 3000.00 and using 5 as the multiplier to turn 20 % in a one person shop. Base price would be $ 15,000.00. Finish and Installation are charged separately. Installation would be by the hour at 22.5 per hour if I make the cabinets and 65.00 per hour if you buy them from someone else. Finsihing is something I would have sub'd out.
Bob ,
For the type , style and quality of this job , here in Oregon $ 9500.00 to $10.000 on the extreme high end would include paint and installation . There will always be some eager Beaver willing to work for $5 an hour who may bid the job at less than half of reality . The answer to how much truly , imo depends on what your local market , and area will allow . Do a market survey and call 5 or 6 reputable custom shops and have them bid apples to apples the same job each , as if you were the wanting client . It would save much time to simply ask the custom shops how much per foot they charge for a particular type of work , in this case it was paint grade low tech no concealed hinges but quite a bit of detail with all the rosettes and fluting and such . BTW when I tally footage for bidding purposes an 84" to 90" tall cabinet that is say 3' wide would be 2 1/2 X 3' = @ 7 1/2' more or less depending on particulars . My count of your job would have been @ 42' total .
Did you tell us yet how much you charged ?
dusty
I see the beautifu; children are looking at the TV and NOT the cabinets! Geeee youngens!
Im in the DFW area and think that 10,000 to 13,000 is about right.
