Peter –
I am on to the next project. I am building a blanket chest with rather small and complex panels within panels. The panels are veneered with sapele Pommele. I will be finishing with shellac. I am experimenting with a coat of linseed oil prior to the shellac to bring out the figure. Finishing the panels before assembly will significantly reduce the overall finishing time.
1) Do I need to protect the 3/8″ edge that will be glued into the slots and the slots. (I am worried about the glue adhering.)
2) If so, will blue tape be sufficient to prevent the wood from being sealed by either the BLO or shellac?
Thanks!

Anna,
Concerning the panels; why are you gluing them? I would think the panel should float inside it's frame.
If you will be gluing them and wanted to protect them from the oil or shellac, a little tape would do the trick.
When you remove the tape give the line of bare wood a once over with some 180 grit paper and you should be good to go.
Have fun.

Peter -
Thanks.
The panels are veneered mdf so I don't have to worry about wood movement. Since I am doing only 3/8 joints for most of the rails and stiles (except the two major horizontal ones, I am gluing them to provide extra strength to the joints (as was suggested in the last article on joint strength.
