A year or so ago, I sawed and stickered a beautiful stack of white oak. When I began moving it inside the barn, I discovered an apparently serious infestation of powderpost insects. What can I do, if anything, to rid the wood of these creatures?
Thank you for counsel. Sincerely, Hadley

Small pieces can be frozen in a deep freeze or fumigated but neither approach is practical for large stacks of wood. Kiln drying will kill them off, but that may not be worth the trouble and expense.
Powderpost and similar infestations have been frequently discussed in the regular Knots section, if you go there and use the search function at the top of the column you will find a lot of information on the subject including some links to technical information on getting a positive ID of your bugs. Some insects that infest wet wood are no longer a problem once the wood has been dried out, hopefully your bugs are of that variety.
Good Luck, John White
