We just bought a pine table & chairs. It is stained with an acrylic lacquer finish. It seems to me that the finish doesn’t look quite tough enough for daily use.
So my question is, can I put a polyurethane top coat over the AL on the table top & chairs?
Thanks in advance.

That CAB is a far more durable finish than the poly you propose. Yes, you could, if you sanded the other, but I wouldn't.

Is this a commercial, factory applied finish? And how do you know the finishing exactly what finish was used?
But in general you ought to have no problems putting varnish over the acyrlic that is fully cured. I would recommend a tradtional resin varnish instead of polyurethane because if there should be some incompatibility the traditional varnish would be a bit more forgiving. If you aren't planning to wear your shoes when you walk on the table you won't need the extra abrasion resistance that added polyurethane resin provides compared to straight alkyd or phenolic resin varnishs.
Yes it is a commercially applied finish.
