My question relates to spray finishing.Has anybody ever tried spraying Minwax fast drying clear gloss polyurethane in a regular spray gun? If so with what results. Does it need to be thinned.
2. For application of water based stain, is it possible to spray it. i want to avoid wiping it because it gets messed up near the moldings that run against the grain.
Any suggestions?

Yes, you can spray oil based varnishes including poly varnish but it is problematic. Because its a slow drying finish, the overspray gets into the air and ends up encrusting enything that it lands on. It should only be sprayed outdoors or inside a proper spray booth. Whether it needs to be thinned is a function of your spray gun and compressor.
Yes, you can spray waterbased dye. However, it requires a bit of skill to be able to do it without going back to wipe it.
Do you have any experience with spraying? If not, I strongly recommend you get Charron's Spray Finishing. Amazon will have it.
I do have some experience with water based finishes when I did my bed. I will check out the book.
Thanks for your advice.

Yes. I spray it all the time. Because of its slow drying, keep a brush handy moistened with paint thinner and repeatedly go over to remove extra varnish and control sagging. Also I keep a rag moisted as well to remove any excess varnish from the brush
