I am finishing a small cherry table with maple stretchers. Because of the different woods (and because I didn’t think ahead before adding the maple to the cherry frame), I used boiled linseed oil instead of stain to bring out the grain and color.
I applied thinned boiled linseed oil, and then 24 hours later unthinned boiled linseed oil. So far it is looking pretty nice. I intend to top it off with minwax hand rubbed urethane varninsh.
How long should I wait before applying the varnish?
Do I need to apply a sealer coat of shellac in between?
Thanks in advance for your advice and insight.
Peace.

Rob,
When I "pop" the grain with boiled linseed oil and after ragging off any excess, I usually wait about a week. Depends on the climate and how much you applied.
You shouldn't need a sealer coat unless you want a "deep" appearing grain. FWIW.

*Best way to know when it can be over-coated is to use your nose. When it no longer has an odor, it is cured. As Dano said, BLO is a good colorant for many woods. It's a lousy stand-alone finish though.
