I’ve been using Naptha when I wipe bare wood after sanding it. What should I use when I sand between coats of regular poly? What about between coats of water-based poly?

I find a lint free cotton cloth dipped in water, wrung out well, and wiped over the sanded surfaces between all polishes works well, fg. Let it dry thoroughly, and maybe additionally wipe down with a dry lint free cloth prior to applying the next coat. I use tack rags too between most finish coats.
I understand that tack rags should not be used between coats of water based finishes, and nor should stearated papers-- the oil/wax element in both products can cause adhesion problems. As I've said elsewhere today, I don't use water based finishes, so I'm just passing on what I've heard, but those recommendations do make sense to me. Slainte.

I use a tack cloth too, but have heard you shouldn't. I have had no problems. If I have had to sand a great deal to remove a speck of dust or a blob of finish, I use a tad of mineral spirits.

I use tack cloths mostly while actively sanding, to get a good view of the wood. Have never found them to be thorough enough to use prior to finishing. Generally, before finishing, I vacuum (outside), then wipe down with Naptha. The other day, I vacuumed and then put on my sticky-finger gardening gloves and ran them over the surface. Was really easy to see how much sawdust was left!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
