I’m designing (and will build) a home entertainment center. Will have a 42″ TV that is 40″ overall wide and 30″ high. Want to use pocket doors (solid 3/4″black walnut panels) but because of 18″ niche depth have to make them bi-fold. So, is this possible? What recommendations do you have for hardware? KV has apparentlly got something that might work but I read poor reviews on their stuff. Any alternative approaches I might use? Tambours are out according to SWMBO. TIA

Yes, it is possible. I just finished a corner cupboard to be used, in part, to house a monster tube TV. Because it is a corner cupboard, there was insufficient room for full size doors. So, I made four doors, mounted them as bifold doors, and then used pocket door hardware. I used hardware from Rockler: medium duty door slide, part no. 11156 and hinge set part no. 40361. I also used brass butt hinges between each pair of doors. I first made a mockup using scraps to better visualize all of the relationships and this was extremely helpful.
I am attaching photos of the cabinet with doors closed and also open. I apologize for the lack of detail about mounting. I would strongly recommend building a mockup, because there are no instructions or articles on this design.
Good luck, Tom.
Thank you so much. Very helpful.

Here are a couple of pictures of an entertainment center I made a couple of years ago using bifold doors. The hardware came from Rockler.
Hafele is a huge supplier of cabinet hardware and if you make anything this is a great source, they are principally trade so you may need an account, but their catolouge is now online at their website in PDF form, so you could check them out. They have multiple pocket door setups and installation diagrams etc.
Thank you also. I now have some new ideas.
