I’m doing a bid for a built in bookcases. The client wants them painted white. I call up supplier to get costs so I can figure my price. I start with 1/4″ birch plywood they have this in white birch over MDF one good side. I make the the mistake of thinking the birch is painted white on one side. I remember reading on the internet about painted sheetgoods and I’m thinking, well if I can paint the doors and trim to match this might be a good thing. I ask the guy on the phone about matching the color and he tells me that there is slight differences in color between the sheets. I think there must be different colors for different lots.
So today I drive the 35 miles to supplier to look at color differences and they don’t carry “white” birch plywood. They carry “white birch” plywood. Silly me. At least I haven’t delivered bid yet so I can adjust for the painting.

Bummer, Dude!
Check out the white oak or white maple.
Or maybe you can talk your client into another color and make them of yellow birch, red gum, or red oak. There's yellow cedar too!

That is funny.. Heh heh.
Sorry I cant help it, but you should look at the Red oak.
Seriously though there are pre primed products out there. There is a melamine that is designed for paint and MDO paints real nice but costs too much for most jobs. MDF is the product of choice for most paint grade jobs.

Pardon my spelling,

Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
I just did a job of painted bookcase built ins. I prepainted them with Sherwin Williams CAB system which worked fabulous. It saves so much time because it is a laquer and dries in about 10 minutes and recoats in about 30 to 60 minutes.I even got a color match for the other built in (dark brown). The finish is beautiful. I used MDF for the sides and solid wood for the shelves because sometimes the sheet good will have a bow in them.
By the way, it's "faux pas".C.

I talked to Sherwin-Williams this morning and they only have white CAB in 5 gallon buckets.
A bit more than I need. citrouille
"By the way, it's "faux pas"." Oh my, my face is really red now!I can't find prefinished white plywood in the St. Louis area. If anyone knows who sells it in this area, please let me know. Otherwise, I paint the birch plywood.Thanks.
