I received a small quantity of wood from a plum tree that a friend in San Francisco removed while landscaping. I have 5 or 6 logs about 4 feet long, ranging from 4 inches to about 8 inches in diameter.
I’m wondering, is it worth it to keep it around? I don’t have a band saw and it’s not clear how I’ll mill it, and then there is all that drying time. Most important. at the end of all that, what will the wood be like and what will it be suited for? I was thinking maybe small boxes.
Has anyone had any experience with plum?

You probably won't find much difference from cherry, unless you find something with a lot of figure.
The size you have is pretty small. Have you ever thought of carving spoons, or something small like that?
Keith,
I agree with you about the size. Carving is not on my list of skills to broach just now. Maybe it's firewood.
B,
Has anyone had any experience with plum?
No. Perhaps you should preserve it for future consumption.... < G >
b52,
The small bit of plum I worked was darker than cherry, and harder. It was very pretty wood, but the piece I had was small, so it was only usable for a handle or two. If you split the sections you have down the middle with a sledge and a couple wedges, you could let them dry as is, and work them up at your liesure.

It's a plum shame you don't have a bandsaw.
As an editor I can sneak in and change things that regular posters can't access, so I fixed your spelling in the header.

Thanks. I felt stupid.
No need to feel stupid, I make dozens of typos and misspellings an hour, I just had to fix one in this sentence. Glad I could help.John W.
I've never worked plum, but it's good bar-b-q wood. Gives meat a nice flavor.
I have a propane grill. Just my luck.
Here's one use:

After it drys will it become prune?
I am sure there are turners in your area that would love to have it, that would be a much better use than firewood.
Russ
I'll ask the folks at the Woodcraft store. There are turners among them. Thanks.
