I am in need of a biscut joiner and was wondering if the off brands are any good or should I shoot for the name brand.

I can't answer the question about being as good as I have only used a DW and Porter Cable but... I have been considering selling my PC (sold the DW to get the PC as it has the tiny 0 cutter) which has been used twice and probably cut no more than 12 slots. The PC is excellent but I simply find I let it gather dust as I have an industrial floor mortiser.
If interested I would sell if for $130 plus $20 shipping (depending on your zip code.. location to Atlanta) and throw in a number of various PC biscuits. PM me through e-mail if you are interested.
Good luck...

Lamello invented the tool and theirs is still top of the game. But if you're a casual user, then both PC and Makita are very serviceable tools.

I have the Porter Cable 557 and quite frankly for the use I give it I over bought. Most of the time my usage is very straight forward 90° slots and I have yet to use the FF feature. If I were to buy one again, I think that I would buy the DeWalt.
HS,
I've used a Mafell for many years - a well-engineered German machine that is not far below the quality of a Lamello but at about half the price - still expensive (around £200 in Britain). Also ,Idon't know if Mafell is widely available in the US.
If you do think of spending Lamello-amounts of money, consider also the Festool Domino. It's a more versatile jointer machine, although it lacks the ability to do specific biscuit-shaped jobs like make rebates for those Lamello half-moon hinges or the right slot for the knock-down metal thangs that one glues into biscuit slots.

I have a Dewalt and it works well.

I owned a lamello for many years. Finally wore it out.then bought a porter cable had it for many years and wore it out.Now I have a makita and it seems to work fine.I think if you go with one of the brand names you"ll be o.k.
I had the PC 557 and it worked great. I used it till I bought the Domino and then sold it for close to what I paid for it. You can catch them on Ebay for resonable prices.
