There is an article in the current American Woodworker Magazine that should answer all your questions.
The only real negatives is that it can not be glued as well as wood. Screws are the best way of joinery. It is also less rigid than solid wood. It can be easily cut and worked with normal woodworking hand and power tools.
I haven't yet read the article mentioned above, but I have used Trex for house trim. It is very flexible and will creep and sag over time. The manufacturer specifically warns against using it in structural applications. I can see why, as it is so soft.
I don't know about other brands.
