I recently dumpster dove a finished but worn 5/4 mahogony table top. What I would like to know is; if i resaw the table top to make something different from the wood, will I damage the blades on my thickness planer by running the boards through it to remove the old finish?

I know from sad experience that most clear finishes and paints will wreck the blades on a planer. I usually remove old finishes with a cabinet scraper with a large burr on it. Sanding off the old finish will leave enough finish and sanding grit behind to also dull the planer blades quickly. Take a close look at the top before you start, many mahogany table tops are only a veneer.

John thank you for the fair warning about dulling planer blades with finished lumber. It looks like I will just go with a distressed look on the finish. Have no fear this is not a veneer, so I will find some excellent use of the material, one mans trash will become anothers treasure.
Thank You again
