I have a Delta 12″ planer (Model 22-580) and the boards have recently started “skipping” or starting/stopping at short intervals when I push them through. The knives are brand new, the maple doesn’t have knots, and I’ve put white grease on the drive assembly per the instructions. It has not done this before so can anyone comment on what could be the problem?
Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
Make sure the feed rollers are clean and try a bed lube like Waxlit.

Ditto to Bob's post. Nine times out of ten, these problems are attributable to dirty feed rollers. Waxing the bed just makes it go even easier. You shouldn't have to "push" the wood through, BTW.
Are the bed rollers adjustable on that model? Try cleaning them and "waxing" the table but if the rollers ARE adjustable they may be at or below the table level and therefore not doing any good at all.
On my old Grizzly planer I keep the bed rollers at about .006 above the table as most of the planing I do is dimensioning already surfaced lumber. When I run rough stuff through the rollers should be a significantly higher but I don't bother adjusting them as it's a PITA with set screws and cams and dial indicator. I just "help" the boards through with a push.
Good luck getting it straightened out!

Thanks for the advice - unfortunately this is an older model Delta and the rollers don't adjust nor does the cutterhead lock. I'll check the rollers for gunk and clean the planer bed and cross my fingers.
We hear this often enough that I eventually did a story (link below) on waxing the tables of planers. Once you see the difference, most make waxing the tables a regular part of their maintenence. Keeping the feed rollers clean is important also but most often, the bed is the problem with the build up of sap and other wood-related stuff that makes it tacky to the wood sliding over it.

I had this happen to my DeWalt one time. It turned out to be worn bearings on the roller shafts which, in turn, caused the toothed drive belt to skip teeth in the sprocket under load. Not sure about the design of yours, but you might want to check the drive belt for this.

Clean your bed good with alcohol on a rag, then give it a good coat of paste wax. (I use Johnson't paste wax) After the wax hazes polish it off with a clean rag. This fixes a lot of planer problems.

I have the same planer & the same problem as Brian.
I cleaned (but didn't wax) the tables. Will do so ASAP.
But how do you clean the rollers? I've heard that alcohol
or any other solvents are not the thing to use as solvents
will likely dry out the rollers.
Any suggestions on what to use to clean the rollers?
Thanks to all.
Bill-
Just use a household cleaner -- Simple Green (might want to dillute it a bit), 409, that kind of thing. If they're really dirty, a nylon scrubber might be a good idea, but be sure and wipe them off with a towel so you don't have a bunch of water in there. Lots of people use mineral spirits, but I prefer to err on the side of caution. When I'm really lazy, I use disposable cleaner cloths (Mr. Clean, Kirkland brand from Costco, etc.)
Be sure an unplug the machine when your hands are in there. It's a pain, yes, when you have to bump the switch to move the rollers, unplug, clean, replug, but a good safey investment.

"Platen Rejuvenator".....a little strong for this girl. Toluene, Methylene Chloride, to mention a couple of the ingredients, all powered by ether. MSDS here.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
