I have a portable planer, Dewalt 733, and it does a good job for small quantities. I need a medium sized planer, about 3 horsepower, to handle larger quantities (several hundred board feet) and tough woods like pecan and hickory.
I wanted to call on the experience here for recommendations.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. Right now, the planer you are describing would probably be the Grizzly G1021X2 http://grizzly.com/products/category.aspx?key=27. These machines have been around a long time and Grizzly beefs up the extreme models so I think this would fit your needs. The spiral cutterhead is a godsend for working any figured wood. Heck, it is a dream for any wood, but more so for the woods you had in mind. I think that machine is even on sale right now.
Thanks Terry. I will check it out.
