planer/jointer – electric motor problem
I needed to replace the 1/2 hp electric motor on my old Craftsman planer/jointer. The motor is attached to one of the two columns beneath the planer table. Fortunately I had good spare motor as a replacement.
Unfortunately, the motor which is virtually identical to the old one, rotates in a direction opposite the old motor! In other words the planer knives are rotating in a direction opposite that necessary to cut.
I could detach the motor from the column and flip it upside-down, but then the starter switch would be beneath the motor. Is there a way I can reverse the direction of the rotation?
Thanks for any help, Tenderfoot Bob

It may be possible to reverse the rotation. There should be a little wiring box attached to the side of the motor. If you open it, there will be a wiring diagram inside. If the motor is reversible, the diagram will show you how to adjust the connections.
If the wiring diagram doesn't show how to reverse the motor, or if there is no wiring diagram (or box) at all, then you can't reverse it.

Thanks Steve. I'll check out reversing the polarity.
"If the wiring diagram doesn't show how to reverse the motor, or if there is no wiring diagram (or box) at all, then you can't reverse it".
Steve, that isn't altogether true. Simple single phase motors are reversible by inter changeing the wires from the field windings. This is easy enough to do if there is a terminal box and the wires are long enough to get hold of without a fuss. If no box it is just more hassle to do....Philip Marcou
If you're willing to partially disassemble the motor, sure, you can do a lot of things. I figure that someone who is asking the question in the first place is not quite at that stage. ;-)
Many years ago, I completely rewound a 30V stepping motor having a maximum step rate of 60 steps/sec so that it would run on 120V and reach 120 steps/sec.

If you can't reverse the location, how about installing a separate starter switch in a convenient location.
