I notice that Associate Editor Matthew Kenney’s grooving planes do not have scoring spurs. With no experience with such planes, I am wondering if this would be a problem in creating clean shoulders, since rabbet planes do have spurs. Can anyone provide information on this?

Paige,
The spurs are typically only used when working across the grain of a panel, i.e. dadoing. Ploughing with the grain, spurs are unnecessary.
