I am looking for a plan for the children’s bed by Asa Christiana in the Nov/Dec 2007 issue (p55), or anything similar. I’m sure I could figure out a cut-list myself, I’m just hoping to save some time.
Mr. Christiana- if you are reading this: any details you can provide on the joints used or materials for the head board, or the post caps?
Thanks,
Brian

Hi, Brian--
Sorry for the delay. It has been a long time since I made that bed. Here's what I remember. I made the headboard and footboard from kiln-dried Douglas fir construction lumber. I used 4x4s for the legs and 2x4s for the rails, cleaned up on my planer. I'm not sure what I used for those thinner vertical pieces that act like a panel between the rails, but I remember that they just sit loosely in a groove in the rails. The rails are joined to the legs with dowels. I used dowel locators to align the holes--I think.
The side rails are some 4/4 ash boards I had lying around. I used ash because it could be thin but still very strong Those rails are joined to the legs with simple surface mounted bed hardware, something like this:

The mattress sits on a piece of plywood, which is supported by cleats. I attached the caps to the tops of the post with clipped nails. The caps are the only thing I would do differently, since they are too easy to pull off. Maybe try dowels and glue. Oh yeah, my wife painted the bed. A fun paint job is the key.
Hope this helps. The main thing is just to wing it and have fun. Just do whatever makes sense to you, and don't be too precious about it.
