The best way is to use an image editing program to reduce the dimensions of the image (reduce the number of pixels). I use Adobe Photoshop because I'm also a photographer, but there are numerous free or almost free basic image editors available.
Hi Tim,
Lots of folks use Irfanview. Google it and it will show you where you can download it free.
It's very easy to use and to resize an image all you have to do it click on the Image menu pick and a dropdown list will appear offering Resize/Resample as one of the list items. Clicking on it will bring up a dialogue box with lots of items in it.
Resize allows you to choose pixels/inches, etc. Lots of folks like to sue pixels but I use inches (5x6) seems to work good here on Knots. I don't mess with Aspect Ration as it will/can distort your image if ye don't know what yur doin - like ME!
Perhaps the most important is what format you use when saving the resized image. You can use just about any format excewpt BMP. They don't get compressed very much if at all so they tend to be BIG. Most folks use JPG (JPEG) as it does compress the image and is generally compatible with both Macs and PCs.
Download a copy and mess around with it off-line first, just to get the hang of it. If I can figunr it out I'm sure you can. If any questions, ask away, lots of folks in here use it - methinks.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Use infraview, its free and works like a charm.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Good information above, but one step that should be your first in the process: crop out un-needed stuff around the outside of what your main subject is. Then resize and save in a compressed file type.
You also might want to check your camera and see if you can change a setting to a lower resolution (sorry if that was mentioned already).
Picasa is free from Google. It is nice editing software and manages uploads to the Internet. If you have a free Gmail account, you get 1Gig of free storage as well. If you use the standard options while uploading, it will re-size your pictures for web resolution while it uploads. 1 Gig is a lot of storage for web resolution pictures. You can upload full size images as well. Web resolution is still more than full screen on most monitors. It is a great organizer and even shows you what pictures have been uploaded already. You can send the links to people, so they can look at your pictures online any time they like. It works great, and you can't beat the price.
