i have a 28 year old, stand alone supply closet that is covered with formica on the outside. i am wondering if it is possible to paint the formica, rather than apply new formica. if so, what kind of prep work is needed and does it matter if you use oil base or latex. thank you

I have never painted a laminate but I think you can. I would lightly sand the laminate with 220 paper first. Then an enamel I would think would be best. Before going with an untested idea like mine, try googling a painting forum and ask there.

If you go to a professional's paint store, like Sherwin Williams, they should have a primer you could use to get a good grip of the finish coat and they will probably tell you to scruff up the surgace with sand paper before you paint it. Scruffing the surface will help the primer bite on it better.

I've painted some laminate kitchen cabinets, and so far, the paint seems to have held up. I scrub them with TSP to eliminate any grease buildup and then use a shellac based primer. After that, a few coats of paint seems to do it. If this is a very smooth formica you may want to think about scuffing the surface before priming.
