What is the best type and brand of paint to spray with an HVLP setup on interior doors? I want a durable enamel type semi-gloss finish.
Thanks,
Mike

Call Jeff Jewitt at Homestead finishing. He will walk you through the options and can then sell you the goods. Lots of people like the Target paint, which he sells (and will tint for you).
It's only a small premium for very high service. Worth the money in my book
I just finished painting kitchen cabinets with an HVLP sprayer and used Benjamin Moore Pro Classic. I read an article that said that it was one of the better paints for spraying purposes and I was pleased with how it worked.
Do you have any more info on the BM Pro Classic paint? I looked on their web site but could not find it.
I looked at the BM web site and could not find it either, which surprises me because it is featured prominently at the store. The pro classic paint is 100% acrylic enamel. The article that recommended this paint was one from Homestead Finishing Products.
Hi Guys, I went to the Homestead site and I think that I've discovered the problem. We sometimes read too fast. Looking at the site, again, it's Sherwin Williams ProClassic and/or Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo Acrylic.
If you look up ProClassic on the Sherwin Williams site, I think you'll get what you are looking for.

Mike,
Thanks for clearing that up. I am spraying three rooms full of trim and wainscoating this weekend. I will double check that I have the optimal flavor of paint. Whichever Benjamin Moore I have been using seems to be working pretty well though.

Ha. You are exactly right - it is SW. Anyway, I was pleased with the paint. I did have to thin it and added some Flotroel. So there are no misrepresentations about my advice, I have done exactly one HVLP paint spraying project and sprayed one brand of paint.
All my "trim" is sprayed with ProClassic. (8000 sq ft so you can imagine the amount of trim). I used Flotrol at twice the recommended amount. One coat after proper priming. Check with SW for the proper primer. It is important to use the right one!
Yes, I used a HVLP sprayer (Turbinair).
Good luck
A bad day woodworking is better than a good day working -- yes, I'm retired!
Hello, hope it's not too late to ask some questions kind of related to this discussion. I'm spraying a kitchen island with a Wagner HVLP 2900 system. I had planned to spray with Ben Moore Satin Impervo because I've had good results using that paint. The Impervo was not available in black so I switched to BM Regal AquaGlo (semi-gloss). My spraying is not going well. Even after fiddling with the gun adjustments, the paint is spraying on bumpy. A bigger mystery is how the color is ending up uneven in random places. In certain spots the color has kind of pooled with a cloudy cast to it. I'm no expert, but this is about my fifth project spraying latex with my HVLP. I know there is a lot of trial and error in finishing work, but I've never had this much trouble before. I would appreciate any suggestions concerning increasing or decreasing air or fluid pressure, needle sizes, this particular BM paint, how much one can thin with floetrol... I don't suspect the problems are due to temperture, humidity...Thanks for any help!
Did you filter the paint?
"I cut this piece four times and it's still too short."
What type of primer would you use for these paints? I want to spray the primer also.
I went to the Sherwyn Williams store and most of the primers they have are latex.

Last year I painted a complete set of kitchen cabinets and was advised to use the M.L. Campbell line of paints. The guy who advised me taught classes in finishing. The price was a bit steep but results were beautiful. I shot the waterbourne which is specifically made for spraying. I was so pleased that I shot my cofferd ceiling and doors with it.
