While thinking about the trend to have everything made in Asia, I came across this:
“As Abraham Lincoln once observed, if he buys a coat from New England, he has the coat and the money remains in the United States where it can be taxed. If he buys it from England, he has the coat.”

Lincoln was a wise man.
I prefer INsourcing to outsourcing. To the extent possible, I try to purchase what I need within the boundaries of my town, so the local government gets the benefit of the taxes levied.
Hobby horse of mine! You manufacture abroad, putting _your_ people out of work. So now they cannot buy your product. However you make a short-term saving/profit. Meanwhile the foreign manufacturer has learned something new which he incorporates into his product and then can easily undercut you.Did anybody say "China"?
THen he buys your debt with money he makes off you. Then he owns you.Next he he has you working to pay off the debt and you become 3rd world!!!!!!
Peter,
Time for a global government and the end of the Nation State (which are often random collections of very different folk, just as with the global village).
Of course, we must somehow defuse the naughty tendencies of the over-powerful - but then that is true also for the governments of both Blighty and the good ol' US of A.
Are you for buying an American car then? Better hurry! :-)
