John do you have an recomendations for finishing buginga for outside use in Arizona. Low humidity, high temp, no direct sun. Plank is 42″ wide by 14′ long and will bekept intact for a table. 8/4 stock. I have asked around knots, no responses, so I assume no one has experience with it. Thanks Morgan

If you are serious about getting a really good clear finish on wood exposed to the weather the best finish is many coats of marine grade spar varnish applied over a prep coat of a two part epoxy sealer from the maker of the varnish. Epifanes is a commonly recommended brand.
Be prepared to spend a lot of money for these finishes, and they will need a new top coat or two as often as twice a year if regularly exposed to intense sun. Inexpensive hardware store spar varnishes aren't in the same league.

Thank you John, I always apprieciate your advice.
The setting of the backyard allows for a rustic look. It is not necessary to have a clear finish like a varnish or the depth of finish like multiple coats of lacquer. What we need is a finish that will help the wood survive, will be easily reapplied by the owner, and is more of a protection. I have finished a small test piece for them in an oil finish, very warm feel to it and easy on the hand. If it checks some, or if it splits some, this is not a problem. We want it to be stable, relatively flat without much cupping or warping.
So with these needs and thoughts, do you still feel spar varnish is the best to use.

Probably what you want then is a penetrating type of deck finish. I don't feel qualified to recommend a brand, but there are a number of them out there. I'd suggest going over to the Fine Homebuilding site and searching for some information there, I'm sure that deck finish is a common concern.John White
