Opinions on Sunhill Machinery? (TS)
I just received an email notice of discounts on Oliver & Sunhill machines. I can’t find these on the Sunhill website, so I’m including the rep’s contact info in case anyone is interested.
Two items catch my eye in particular, the 10″ Oliver jointer for $1695, and the Sunhill cabinet saw for $695. The jointer is way out of my price range at the moment, but the saw is not. Does anybody know anything about the quality etc of Sunhill machinery? It’s $130 cheaper than the Grizzly G1023S, but with a wider rip capacity and a built-in mobile base. (The latter, in the form of a Shop Fox unit, will cost an extra $69.95 from Grizz.)
Any opinions???
TIA,
augie

I have the Sunhill 1/2 hp power feeder. It came wired for 220, and they were very responsive in helping me rewire it for 110, even getting me instructions from Taiwan (in Chinese) and then translating it over the phone. I think most of their stuff is from Taiwan. The feeder has worked great for 10 yrs.
Augie,
I cannot address the quality of Sunhill, it may be great. However, if you look closely at that 10" table saw you'll see a 2 hp motor...the Griz 1023 is 3 hp....and the fense on the griz is a shop fox classic (Bies clone)...I'm not sure what is on the Sunhill. For those two reasons alone I'd pay the extra for Griz 1023...
Augie, wait,,, no weight is what I ... well heck I mean both. A Delta Unisaw weighs 600lbs and no respectable cabinet saw comes with less than a 3hp motor. Jet use to make a 2hp but they gave it up and it really wasn't a cabinet saw since the trunion was still bolted to the table. For that price you could be standing behind a General International contractors saw and have a lot more to be proud of. Think about that before you let some marketing agency convince your that your getting something you're not.
Sincerely;
The Tool Guy
I am getting ready to buy a TS and have been looking at the 1023. Your post peaked my interest. I have not used Sunhill, but have heard good things. When I went to the link you provided two things jump out at me. First issue is the 2hp motor and second is the weight of 300 lbs. The Griz is a 3 or 5hp motor and weighs 60lbs more. One other feature you might check is the belt pulley set up. The Griz has a triple belt setup and some saws I have looked at that are cheaper only have a single belt. If you decide to go with it, let us know how it performs.
