I have large wooden salad bowl which I am in the process of refinishing. My question is, What would the best solvent to use to get out the gummed up oil that now saturates the inside and outside of the bowl. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would try to scrape the bowl clean with a curved cabinet scraper and then wipe it down with fresh oil. A good scrubbing with dish detergent and a scrub pad would probably also work.
Any solvent will soak into the wood and will be impossible to remove completely. I can't think of any solvent that I would want to have lingering in a salad bowl, even if it were non toxic, it would still impart a flavor to the food. If you must use a solvent, pure ethanol, that hasn't been denatured, would be safe if some traces lingered in the bowl.

Thanks for the tip on ethanol. I should have mentioned I have been scraping it down (one of the bennifits of working in a metal shop is that I can make all the curved scrapers I need), but still find that there is a gummy residue. I also did'nt think of the simple "solution" of a little soap and water. thanks again. john h.
Try a strong household cleaner. I had a similar problem with a beautiful 16-inch teak bowl that is about 25 years old and used 904 on it with hot water. It worked, but took a few repeat applications and scraping with a plastic-wool pad. Then I just dried it - no mineral oil or anything needed. Used it tonight.
