On last weeks holiday in Yorkshire I was lucky to find a half set of hollows and rounds by Sims of London in a junk shop, just in need of TLC. The irons had surface rust, cleaned up by a soaking in Corro dip which is a very effective rust treatment made in Australia.
To my mind the interesting thing is that the treatment has revealed the fact that the irons were of two part constuction. The photo of the backs of some shows the position of hard steel forge laminated to the body of the iron. I wonder if this stuff would similarly reveal otherwise hidden repair work carried out on tools?
The planes are being freshened up and will be put to use soon.

Mufti,
I dont think that the cleaner revealed any repairs.
I think that the irons are higher strength steel welded on to lower (cheaper) strength steel or iron. This was common in old days to save money and conserve the better steel. Laminated irons are still common in japanese planes and chisels.
Sharpen them up and use them.
