I am an occassional visitor to CooksTalk but now worlds have collided. I was given a beautiful, old wooden dough rising bowl. I looks as though it has been visited by some kind of wood eating mite. I’m not sure it was termites, as the damage does not appear to be extensive and is limited to small holes. It does not have a finish on it. Here’s my question; is there a way for me to seal the inside of this bowl so that it can bee used for its intended purpose? Can I use plastic wood to fill the holes and some kind of food safe acrylic to seal the inside? Thanks in advance! Kyle |

Welcome, Kyle.
You have basically three options, those being poison, freezing and microwave, if any of the borers are still present. The first is not recommended, but the last two are. Microwaving can distort or crack the wood, for a cautionary note, but a dough bowl is pretty thick, so it's not as likely as with a thinner piece of wood. I've read that 700 watts does the trick on termites.
I haven't found any wood fillers that hold as well as Bondo, the auto-body filler. It's the ONLY thing that works for me with exterior remodeling, conditions that your bowl will approximate with moisture, if not heat. You can add coloring to the Bondo to get it to a "wood" color, since it's normally a dusty purple when mixed. I just recently mixed some glop from the bottom of a stain can with some Bondo to sturdy up some walnut knotholes i used for box top panels--use a little extra catalyst when you add colorant. If you can mask off the area around the holes, better yet, or else sand it afterward. I would let it cure (about 15 minutes), sand it smooth, and not worry about the residual solvents. <G>
Don't use any film forming finish in your bowl! It will come off in flakes in your dough. Use mineral oil, like baby oil, or just leave it bare. You really don't need to oil it to "feed the wood" except to make it pretty to look at, bec the wood is dead, dead, dead.
And when you get 'round to using this thing, i have a weakness for potato-rosemary sourdough...
Thanks for the advice and counsel. I wll head to the neasrest Pep Boys to pick up some Bondo. I will also get my starter out of the fridge and get started on the Potato Rosemary :-)
