Since everyone here at Knots are good boys and girls, what did you get for Xmas (from family and/or friends, too 😉 )?
I’ll start: my family was at a loss this year, and didn’t get any help from me when I said I really didn’t need/want anything. So I got a $75 gift certificate from Amazon.
I decided to put it towards a Biesemeyer Snap-in splitter for my Unisaw. Something I’ve thought for awhile I should get, but couldn’t quite bring myself to put out the $119 for. With an easy-on / easy-off splitter, I figure I’ll actually use the thing, and maybe prevent an accident from happening.

I got a Ron Hock Cryogenically A2 plane blade and a Ron Hock chip breaker for my #4 bench plane and a Ron Hock marking knife blade. So got to spend some time tuning my #4 and making a handle for my new marking knife...
Happy new year to all of you, Ole
.... I Love the smell of sawdust in the morning....
So what's the deal with the "cryongenically" treated blades?
Cryogenic treatment - an extreme cold treatment (-320F) - increases the steel's toughness without any degrease in hardness (62 HRC). You get increased wear resistance without any increase in brittleness so a Cryogenically treated blade will hold its edge longer. You can keep working instead of sharpening.

I haven't tried cryogenically treated blades before so I got no hands on experience yet....... I Love the smell of sawdust in the morning....
I got a manual pasta saw. I dont know what it is, a pasta press, pasta surface planner? Cutter, squish and instant ravioli maker thing. Has 5 heads.
cool, just have to find the time, like the pizza dough right?
And yes I meant to be in this forum, I just figured you should know.

I got an SCM SI300S slide saw. Im in awe!! Happy Holidays everyone! Bob
Barry,
Great choice! I added one of those a few months ago and, yes, I actually use it now. Very easy to pop in and out when doing stuff where the spliter gets in the way. I feel MUCH safer now.
Wayne
p.s. install was easy; requires a bit of contortion but not too bad
Wayne,
Good to here. It'll be a while before I can try mine out ('chose free "super saver" shipping from Amazon, so it'll take a while to get here).
O.R. Hammer, thanks for the link.
Kwimac,
so what's the weather like in your parts in June and July. i get the summer off this year, and the family's been talking about taking a trip "down under" (we've never been to that part of the world), but I realize it'll be winter there at that time.
Barry
Depends where you want to go and what you want to do! June and July are midwinter, and where I live that's way cold (although not cold by northern US standards). But in the far north (which is just about winterless) it's still pleasant.
I'm in New Zealand (check out http://www.codc.govt.nz), near Queenstown, which is the adventure capital of the South Pacific. Skiing, jet boating, climbing ... you name it!

I got a couple of weeks with nothing in my diary. Gonna finish my 'ultimate office desk' which has been parked in the spare room for a few months! It's high summer in Kiwi, and nuttin happens till Feb. Yay!

No tools for me this time around. But Santa did bring a small radio control airplane, battery operated and called a park flyer. It's a lot of fun although I noticed one tree outside my workshop, evidently upset because I wasn't paying attention to all things wood, grabbed it and held it captive for about an hour. This during only it's second flight. I've wanted something like this since I was about 10 and my wife bought it for me since I've been a good boy. (And I'm growing older but not up!)
Hope all had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!
Kell
I got a PC 3/4"-2-1/2" 16 guage air gun. Used to attach some 2 X 4's to make some legs. Nice
And what did I give. Got to buy my 3 kids Ipod's
ASK
A LN Skew Block Plane (left handed) with nicker. My wife was also thoughtful enough to include the tool used to hold the nicker while sharpening!
Got a Veritas large shoulder plane and marking guage. If I can only get out to the shop to give it a try.
Doug
Well, right before christmas, I received my new Delta 31-255x drum sander. A second present I received, while not for woodworking does have possiblilities. I was reading a ww magazine at books-a-million, and it had an article about making shaker style boxes. The guy outlined how he bent the wood. He used a turkey fryer with a hose coming out the top and into the steam box. Well low-and-behold, I received a turkey fryer for Christmas. I think I may just give building a steam box a try! Merry christmas!!!
Gotta a Grizz 14" ultimate bandsaw. I love it. Best gift I may have ever received.
Happy Holdiays----
Thank you,
The Great Marko
I got two milled card scrappers from Lee Valley
The Lee Valley miniature block plane (very small)
Henry Taylor #5 bent gouge
leather tool roll
leather pouch for scrapers
Skill saw
I bought myself another mrking guage and 1"butt chisel
Derek
Well Santa did bring a few gifts in the wood work dept. Quick clamps which you can never have to many of, 2= 6" and 2= 4 1/2 ". From Big brother too. I can keep the feet warm in the shop with new socks and with the two large cup and half coffee cups I don't think I run out of coffee while working out in the shop, I even got a1 lbs. can of gourmet coffee to enjoy.
One more Holiday and back to work !
Let us all take a minute of each day and pray for the one's less fortunate and the ones going through the earth quake disaster over the holiday..
I got my Christmas present in September! the PSI overhead blade guard, on sale. Hubby sprung for a day-after-Christmas shopping trip too, though, so I picked up some clothes (real slacks, instead of jeans, LOL! and a nice pair of shoes. See "it's been a year" thread in Cafe).
The other thing I "picked up" during the shopping trip was a nasty cold/flu thing, so I've been pretty much down for the count.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Got a 1023slx cabinet saw and a G0500 jointer. Other than that, not very exciting--2 t-shirts in the middle of winter, and three ties just made for cosmoline cleanup duty.
Best in the New Year to all wood rustlers.
Hey gang, got you all beat. My wife went out and bought me a 2004 Ford Ranger XLT so I can stop using her Conversion van to haul all the lumber to the shop and finished goods to my customers. A total suprise to me, I couldn't and still don't believe it.

I got the Veritas large shoulder plane and a Garmin 240 fish finder!Alan & Lynette Mikkelsen, Mountain View Farm, est. 1934, Gardens & Fine Woodworking, St. Ignatius, MT
I got a pair of round and half round pattern maker's rasps, a half inch Sorby registered chisel, and a copy of American Furniture of the Eighteenth Century by Jeff Greene. How did she ever know? (It could have something to do with that list I gave her.)
So did it have one of those big red bows on the roof?
I always wondered if anyone actually gave someone a car that way (i.e., lead them out ot the driveway where car awaits with big bow on it, etc.).
No my wife put the keys in a small box and gave them to me. There were a few people in on it from my best friend right up to my mother in law.
porter cable 12 compound miter saw
28 ga. double barrel shotgun its sweet
Wow, Tommy. How about a pic of the 28 ga.?Hope you all had a merry Christmas and that the new year is safe, prosperous and pleasant.Leon Jester

Last month everybody at my husband's company received an E-mail announcing that there would be lay-offs coming. If you think that E-mail is a cold way to hear about lay-offs, it gets worse: The E-mails were sent the day before the holiday weekend! And the messages ended with an enthusiastic prediction of a bright future for the company and its [remaining] employees.
The good news is that my husband kept his job, but we still decided to scale 'way back on Christmas presents. So...he didn't get his fancy, floor-standing drill press. :( But we're on the lookout for clearance sales on plain vanilla, table-top models.

Three-quarters of a complete set of FWW, including 37 of the vaunted first 50 issues. I feel that if I actually get around to reading them, I will truly be dangerous and insufferable.
veritas apron plane w/ a2 blade, stanley #4, socks to go w/ them and some lie-nielsen card scrapers. I'm quite impressed w/ the veritas block plane, fit and finish are nice, and it can take a fall on cement, clumsy me found this out christmas day, lol. The stanley on the other hand is going to take quite a bit of work, but Ive got some time this weekend.
something similar happened at my place of business a few years ago. A the group meetings in December, they announced there would be some layoffs. It would all be decided and announced on January 8. Now go have a nice holiday season! I still wonder what they were thinking.
My first Lie-Nielsen plane. Just the low angle block plane, but it is beautiful. Used it to fit 7 drawers in a couple of hours. Man I want more.
Actually I picked this out myself. I got it through the Fine Tool Journal:
https://secure.wowpages.com/ftj/lnorder.html
at about 10% less than normal retail ($87), with free shipping. Very pleased.
merle
I actually got a subscription to FWW!This is my first subscription. I've always just bought individual issues from Borders if an issue looked like it had a lot of interesting articles. The gift was from my son and daughter-in-law. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I'm making their dining room furniture for their new house?!Rich
My wife ordered me..
24" straight edge (dead flat both sides)
feeler gauge (for setting jointer knives)
feather board (plastic one for my TS)
can of Boeshield T-9 (works great)
veritas dovetail markers 1:6, 1:8 (great because they let you mark the top line too)
.. all stuff I'd been wanting as I paged through the Veritas catalog but for some reason wouldn't order for myself.
I got a Veritas medium shoulder plane, a lee valley cabinet makers tape measure and 3 water sotnes from lee valley! A 200 grit, a 800 and a 4000 finishing stone. I am new to woodworking and it was a great feeling to actually sharpen my tools so they could cut the hair on my arm, just like in the pros in the magazines!
Almost forgot: "400 Wood Boxes", published by Lark Books (ISBN 1-57990-459-9). If you're interested in boxes or small cabinets, this is a must. Heaps of inspiration, some cool project ideas, all the innovation you could imagine. Bedside reading for weeks, then a constant reference.

Courtesy of E-bay, Santa dropped off a Disston D-8 rip saw.The Disstonian says it was made in the 40s or early 50s.I've got to strip what's left of the finish off the handle and touch the blade up with a file.Woo-hoo!!Leon Jester
A LN Scrub plane. Been traveling during the holiday week, so I'm hoping to get to try it out tomorrow.Dave
