I recently aquired 10 sheets of Oak Burl backed Veneer. It sat for years I guess with veneer tape scattered all over the burls. When I remove the tape, it leaves a light spot where the tape use to be, I tried sanding it out (all the way through) staining, dying, leaving it in the sun, heating it and using water. I can’t get rid of the lines from the tape. I haven’t tried an amonia tent yet but I will if you think it’ll work. This wood is absolutely beautiful. What should I do?

I think there is actually a chance that the ammonia fuming might work. But I've never tried it. Use a piece just large enough to be sure you get the effect you want. Otherwise, it will eventually even out, if evenly exposed to light and air, but eventually could be several years.
Thanks. I've got some smaller pieces that came with it. I'll try it. Any idea how long it takes to get the normal results?
That depends on several things. First is the concentration of the ammonia. Household ammonia will take a long time. There is a bit stronger type--sometimes called "industrial strength" sold at places like Ace Hardware as a stronger cleaner, and then there is the 21% variety, which you will find hard to find. It used to be widely used where ever real blue prints are made, but that's a rare tecnology now-a-days, having been replaced with xerographic reproduction of those large sheets.
It will also depend on temperature. As with most chemical reactions warmer is faster. But, you need ventilation here, since you don't wan't to be breathing the ammonia.
It will also depend on the wood itself.
So that was a long way of saying, I don't know. I'd arrange a tenting system that I could see through enough to gauge progess to some degree, and perhaps us a low wattage bulb in side to boost temperature so I could still do it outdoors.
Thanks very much. Temp won't be an issue here in AZ. In another month or so it'll be over 100 degrees. In the mean time, I'll start taking off the veneer tape. Thanks again for the advice.
