Sorry Corrie. It slipped through the cracks. What was your question? Gary
Refer to "Building Furniture" Three Bookcases by Philip C Lowe - A Fine Woodworking Publication - The Mahogany Bookcase spesific. Demonstration is given on making OGEE Bracket feet page 22 but no dimensions is given at all. My question was could you perhaps assist in giving dimensions to fit this constuction or give an alternative which I could use.
Thanks
Corrie
Corrie,
I don't have that book. Does it specify when the article was written. All this information, surprisingly enough, is not available to me so I'll have to go through back copies of my magazines to find it. I remember the article but not when. Thanks. Also, I am presuming that these feet are supporting a bookcase of some size. [The photos will give us a clue.] Do you have another sized bookcase in mind since you ask about dimensions? Larger, smaller bookcase? And is there a style that you want instead of the ogee bracket? So if you working in an Arts and Crafts style instead let me know. Thanks. Gary
Attached please find copies of the book I was refering to as well as pictures of the diagram and view of cases. The one Iam refering to is the clasical one on the far right of the picture. The one in mahogany.
Thanks
Corrie
Corrie,
Got the article located finally. Thanks to Steve as well.Bracket feet like this are of course designed to fit a piece. Based on that bookcase design, I'd say the feet are about 5" to 6" tall/ wide. That's roughly the same size as the base pieces on the two day bookcase in that article. The length of the feet will depend upon the scroll work you do on that foot shape and how far you want it to extend along the base of the bookcase. As to alternative methods, period style pieces will show cabriole style feet attached to rails to create your plinth or even straight 2x2 or 3x3" columns with scrolled knee blocks to create a smaller bit of flair. Look at some Chinese furniture to see other variations on the cabriole style plinth. Just keep in mind that any base or foot that you make for a piece has to match in terms of style, shape, and proportion in order to support the bookcase and blend in well. Good luck with your project. Gary
Corrie,
The bookcase happens to be in my cube at FWW. FYI it was finished by Peter Gedrys in issue 197. The feet are exactly 6 in. wide and 5 in. tall so good guess Gary!
All the best,
Mark Schofield, Managing editor, FWW
Thanks mark for the dimensions. I do appreciate the good work you people do and the feedback received. Keep up the good work. Thanks to Gary also for trying to obtain info re my request.
