Hi All
I am a New Zealand woodworker who will be in the Seattle port area for around a month from the 15th of May. I currently working on a large private yacht doing repairs and maintenance.
It would be great to see if there are any woodworkers / furniture makers who would like to get together to talk shop or to show me around some workshops or anything like that.
You can look me up on the web under www.nwdesigns.co.nz
Looking forward to hearing from anyone in the area.
Kind regards
Nigel

Nigel,
Can't speak to the Seattle area, but the Port Townsend WA area, on the Olympic Peninsula about 40 miles Northwest of Seattle, is a center of wooden boatbuilding and repair as well as furniture (and other!) craftsmanship. You'd have to either drive around through Tacoma (long day) or drive up to Whidbey Island and take the Keystone ferry since the Hood Canal Bridge is closed through sometime in June.
You might consider giving the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock WA http://www.nwboatschool.org/ , talk to director Bill Mahler or lead instructor Tim Lee, and see what develops.
Pete
Hi Thanks for the tips I will put it on my to do list. All the bestN
Holy Smokes, I looked at putting a trip together for Port Townsend and Port Hadlock. Without the bridge, it would be 3 ferry trips there and 3 ferry trips back for me, plus all that driving! Darn that bridge repair!!! Could have made the trip with Nigel, Tom (pig roast guy) and me and hubby, maybe more, but I'm gonna have to take a rain check.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
There's a bridge? When did they build a bridge?
I speak of the Hood Canal Bridge, built in the early 1960's, between the upper part of the Kitsap Penninsula and the eastern edge of Olympic Peninsula. Bainbridge Island only one bridge, at the north end of the island, connecting us with Kitsap Peninsula. See map below, Hood Canal Bridge is just to the left of the red star.
Having the HC bridge closed for a few weeks means no quick trips to visit Port Townsend! and no yummy pie at the Chimacum Cafe! :-(

Pete, et al.: Nigel got the whirlwind tour yesterday, breakfast at Lowell's in Pike Place Market, a couple of galleries, including Northwest Fine Woodworking gallery, which is always inspiring, Seattle Center for Wooden Boats and then Coyote Woodworks on Bainbridge Island, where David Kotz builds natural form furniture and mills big, big trees into lumber to tempt us all -- cedar, maple, cherry, yew, elm, the list goes on. Ron Messersmith from here at Knots graciously kept his shop open an extra hour to give us a tour. Thanks, Ron!!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Nigel, you're just missing a woodworkers' get-together in Seattle this weekend! -- a mix of people from Knots and another forum, WWA. But I can think of two or three local people who might be available the following week, one of whom has some history with the Wooden Boat Center, two other professionals. A Port Townsend visit would be fun -- it's a hub of woodworking, and has a new school also. I'll drop you an email this evening.
Welcome to the USA.. I hope ya' find us Yanks.. at least sort of OK!
Only in New Zeland for one day, or was it night?.. Our aeroplane wad a Hick-Up and we had to stay over for the night. Yes, we were sprayed with BUG SPRAY! Huge amounts of it as I recall!
