Hi
What’s the best way, or what’s best to use to clean off all that factory supplied grease, gunk and coatings that cover a bran new plane or chisel ? i’ve heard solvents but that’s a bit generic, Petrol and Meths – too much of a residual smell
Any new tool tune up tips, cleaning tios much appreciated..

fredolate, I am not sure what you have available in the UK. Mineral spirits is what I typically use. Another alternative for me is charcoal lighter (coal oil) or even WD-40. Of course, all have a residual smell.
Maybe some of the other members from the UK will respond.

Steve,
This is good for diluting grease and such on planes or other metal tools that come with such protection from the manufacturers. As camelia also offers anti-rust protection, it's double-good. There is a smell but it's not overpowering like that of WD40 and similar.

Steve,
In North America, chisels are usually coated with lacquer to prevent rusting, etc. Lacquer thinner, of course, is the solution.

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies and pointers, The camelia oils sounds a go, in the end I'm using windolene soaked cloths with a touch of white spirit to clean off, before moving onto the sole lapping stage..
much appreciated,
