Last night I was turning some small souvenier bats for my daughters softball team and I needed a steady rest to hold the center. Being new to turning and not having all the tools I use whatever is handy. That turned out to be said daughters inline skates. I just attached on the back of the lathe with two of the wheels resting in the handle of the bat. Worked like a charm, plus I felt smart for finding a solution that was very cheap and worked as well as the real thing. Maybe someone else could use this idea?

its all about making use of what you have
I once made a cigar holder out of a wrench, an 18" bar clamp, and a C clamp when I no longer wanted to hold it while playing poker.

Hey
I used inline skates to make my steady rest it has 3 wheels that trap the work top front & back.
Be careful using 2 wheels that rest on the back of the work- when doing long flimsy turning it can spring up in your face.
I learned the hard way.
