Bob,
A visit across the street to our neighbors at the Creek and Woodnet should get you plenty of info.

Bob I saw one in woodcraft last month. I wasn't very impressed. I of course took it apart... My first impression was that the lever cap was cheap. When I took the blade to look at the adjuster the little pin on the adjuster flipped over, and was a PITA to get right side up and back into the blade. Overall there is lots of room for improvment. I was actually fairly impressed with the Woodriver planes.
Veritas planes use the Norris style adjuster as well. I own the 4 1/2, and I think it's executed fairly well.
Who deleted my response about what I thought of the new Stanley planes? Was I censored for being critical of this new product line? They ARE very poorly made, there is no nice way to say that. And it is my opinion that Stanley's use of the Sweetheart logo is a ripoff.

I think there is still one in the Clifton vs. Ln thread...
My post was critical of the planes as well and it's still there. I had a post deleted once, looking back my word was probably a bit harsher than I intended.
Please, good or bad that's what I wanna hear. Sounds like initial impressions of Chris Swartz (sp?) were kinda mild in comparison. I don't have any Bedrocks and was kinda hoping to hear good things about the #62, oh well.

I highly recommend the LN #62. It was money well spent.
I'd say bad. I wouldn't spend my money on the any of the ones I looked at, as I believ there are better alternatives in that price range. That said I don't know of any other #62 in this price range.
I was actually confusing the Stanley #4 review with the #62... I just read the #62, and I see the shwartz review does not recommend the plane.
Buster,
I really appreciate your help. I've always wanted a Bedrock plane, if nothing more than to see the difference(s) from a Bailey.
I do like Millers Falls planes, at least the two that I have. JFrostJr gave me a #15 and I have a #9 that my was my fathers. I sharpened a MF block plane for a friend which was also a great plane. Couldn't uh chisel it out of him though. :-)
I'm going to the WWIA next month so am hopiing to at least get a chance to try some planes.

Bob,
I'm in total agreement on the Millers Falls. The ones that I have are good solid performers and a pleasure to use.

Mel,
That's stretching it a bit, but I wouldn't mind one or two more border collies. <gr>
Moments ago, I just finished up the replacement seat for an old oak rocker that once belonged to my wife's grandparents. I made the seat out of the top of a discarded dresser of the same vintage. A glued-up panel with grain running in all directions. My Millers Falls #6 got it clean and flat in no time with almost no tearout. For some strange reason, I reach for a #6 or #3 quite a bit. Don't know why, but it works for me and I suppose that is all that counts!
Best to you and yours,
-Jerry
Hi Jerry,
Still learning about Millers Falls planes but a MF #6 isn't a fore plane as it would be if it were a Stanley right? I have a #15 (about the same size as a #5 Jack) and #9 (smoother ala Stanley #4) if my noggins on right.
Where does a MF #6 kinda fit into the Stanley scheme in terms of size?

Hello Bob,
The Millers Falls number is 18. I was just using the "No. 6" to denote the working size of the plane. NOW, if there WAS a Millers Falls #6 bench plane it would be roughly equivalent to a Stanley #1 and I could send both my dog and cat to graduate school by selling it on Fleabay. Woof!
Later!

"Im going to the WWIA next month so am hoping to at least get a chance to try some planes."That awesome. I wish I was going. A little too far, and a little too late in the year.Trying the planes is really the best thing you can do. It is the best way to determine which plane is the best for you.

You'll try them and then you'll buy them. : )
If you have the chance, try Ron Brese's infill plane. I tried it out last year and the thing is sweet.

Ron's planes are very sweet. They are excellent value for money in this style of plane. I built his small smoother kit, which was very straight forward as the machining was spot-on. Infill is ebony.

Hi Derek,
I'm a fan of your work. Nice plane. I'm sure it works wonders when it needs to. I don't have one of those little babies but it is on my wish list.

Bob,
We have the new Stanley planes at the Woodcraft store. As soon as I saw them, I took each one apart (and then put it back together. My assessment is the same as everyone elses. They are not good. They are much worse than the Wood River planes. I was very disappointed. I was hoping that Stanley was going to turn things around.
Who knows? Maybe they will get some feedback and turn things around. However, I wouldn't bet on it. If I were them, I wouldn't have let this batch see the light of day. The reason is that now people are really going to be skeptical.
Look on the bright side. There are still lots of old Stanleys around. And fettling a few of them helps put the woodworker in great shape.

Mel,
To me it seems rather silly when you take into consideration the price, makes the LV and LN planes a lot more attractive methinks. Thnik I'll stick to real Sweehearts.

Bob,
You hit the nail on the head. The new Stanleys make the case that LV and LN and old Stanleys are the only way to go.You know, I am disappointed at Chrysler and General Motors too.
But that's another story. (more suitable to the Cafe :-)
Have fun.

Mel,
Just trying to figure out exactly what you are saying. Wouldn't be the first time that I couldn't figure something out....

Jerry,
The topic is how good are the new Stanley planes. A bunch of folks tried them and found them not to be so good. I was only adding that I tried them and found them to be not so good (actually much worse than that). Hope that explains it. It wasn't all that important.

Look on the bright side.. LOL..
The first thing I thought of was ..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2UP86bciVA&feature=related
I did not post the original video on the cross. Some may think offensive. I do not think it is. But I am just me. I for one think God loves us for what we are. OK, if we are not THAT bad!
I post because my only Son came back this week to pick up all (most of his stuff) Filled a two horse trailer from Colorado. He and she went off in a huff?.. Mostly She.. But I still think she is perfect for my Boy/Man.. Although I will never tell HER that!
My 'Bright Side' this week was hugging my Son once again! He is way cool! And his wife is also.. She is Welch and talks funny. I love her but she does not like me.. I am OK with that. My Son loves her.. All that counts in my mind.

WG,
Your way of looking at things keeps us all fresh.
Gotta "look on the bright side".
Give those grandkids a hug, and tell them that Freddy says hi. By the way, now that Freddy is talking a bit more, he says his name, but he doean't say t wo syllable words, so he calls himself "Fred". So his name may change from Freddy to Fred, now that he is growing up (That would be 19 months old).
Have fun.

Mel.. My oldest daughter first started talking in sentences. She has not stopped talking since..
My Son hardly talked at all as a baby.. Just grunted and whatever so his three sisters did stuff for him! These days he will talk to a large stone in a path walked if he sees it!
That would be 19 months old.. Same as My Giana. Italian father!

Mel..
My Italy girl in the middle! And her mother looks exactly like my wife but a bit shorter than the father and mother? What?
