Welcome, Tom!
I've only been in here for a few weeks, but I sure am glad I am. Answers are very quick to come, it seems, and the knowledge is abundant and then some. Glad to have you in here.
Tom,
We have some terrific talent on this forum with decades of experience from all over the world. Just don't ask any tough questions like which is the best table saw...or left tilt/right tilt.. welcome
Tom,
Welcome to Knots! You'll find that responses to posts usually come rather quickly here, but more so in the evenings.
As for level of expertise, look at the photos of forum members' work in the "Gallery" section. You won't find a lot of famous names there, but the work speaks of some truly expert woodworkers.
Check out the posts. You'll find folks here like "Forest Girl" and "Sarge" who between them know just about everything about every machine on the market today; Jon Arno who should write a book on wood properties; Charles Stanford who has turned his back on electrified woodworking and does it all by hand.
I've posted some links here for you to check out. These are websites for some of our regularly participating members. Check them out; these guys are some of the very best.
Lee Grindinger, master carver http://www.furniturecarver.com/
Richard Jones, Scotland's gift to modern cabinetry and design http://r-gjones.laof.home.att.net/
And Mike Taylor, a guy I think should receive some sort of award for the miraculous work he does in tool restoration http://pages.sbcglobal.net/mike_in_katy/PlaneWood/Default.htm
Oh, and some of us who are regular sawdust makers and not experts, but we're not stupid either.
Jeff
Edit note. Sorry, goofed up the links. Not a computer expert either.

Thanks Jeff. I went to the links and was very impressed. I will start splitting my time between here and woodnet. Thanks!
Welcome. You'll note that since I wasn't mentioned I fall into the category of other sawdust makers of ill repute :-).
Posts get responded to pretty quick, so long as they aren't already dead horses or impossibly broad or, forgive me for saying, outright stupid. Rarities, all.
Expertise ranges from new guys to folks who honestly know so much I'm a little amazed at their charity for spending time here. Case in point, Richard J, aka Sgian Dubh. He doesn't post a lot, but when he does, there's no putzing around with wild guesswork. Thats another website worth a gander. Then there's the handful of Breaktimers who hang out here too as a means of feeding a woodworking fetish (guilty as charged). I vastly prefer building furniture, but remodeling is what pays the bills at the moment.
The key to forum happiness is avoidance of all things political.

Hi Tom, and welcome! Here are a couple tips to get quick and appropriate answers to your questions:
Give your thread a well-thought-out title
Put it in the most appropriate section (finishing, joinery, etc.)
Give us specifics when possible
Here's the link to Sgian (Richard Jones) gallery:

We have some real experts here, and lots and lots of different ways of doing things! Have fun.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
