New Jet Lathe 1220VS- powerful enough?
I’m thinking of getting into wood turning and the new Jet Mini-Lathe 1220VS is an intriguing starting option. I’m mainly interested in turning spindles and decorative work for furniture. However, I’m confused why the old Jet 1014VS is rated at 1/2 hp with 5 amps while the the 1220VS is rated 3/4 hp with only 4.5 amps. Is the 1220Vs really more powerful? Is it powerful enough to turn large spindles- say 3″ in diameter by 40″? By the time one purchases a bed extension for the 1220VS- the price of it ($670) approaches that of the Nova 1644 when it’s on sale ($850.00). For mainly spindle turning- what would be the argument for going with the Jet over the Nova? Is the variable speed control that necessary for spindle work?

Lyptus, You don't need much h/p to turn 3" dia by 40" spindles .These are not large at all !/2 hp will do it but more h/p is better if you get into bowls .Variable speed is great and desirable but again not vital for your current application. We turn coopered 12"by 96" columns on a 1 h/p varible speed lathe with great success and a light touch.Sorry I cannot advise specifically on your choice of lathes as I have never used them. Have fun turning, jako
