I just noticed on his website that Lonnie Bird has a new DVD, “Mastering Handplanes”. I emailed Lonnie, and he says Woodcraft and Hartville Tool carry it or you can order directly from him for $27. The address is on his website under the DVD link. I have benefited greatly from his dovetail DVD, and know this one will be great too. I ordered mine yesterday. Tom

Tom,
His dovetailing DVD was very good. However, I found it a little odd (amusing) how, after spending the majority of the DVD emphasizing sawing and chiseling techniques, he recommends using a router to remove the waste when cutting half-blind dovetails.

That is not surprising at all, especially if he is talking of the sockets: much quicker, guarranteed flat bottoms, consistent depth, less boring . And you can do it free hand, no jig.Philip Marcou
Philip,
You are shurely forgetting the importance of the Dominant Taxonomies, which dictate that one should not mix hand tools with power tools as they will cause an explosion in the psyche which might manifest physically as furniture made for the furniture's sake rather than for supporting the rituals and dogmas of Woodworking Religion Variety 67A.
Also, use of a router as described will cause the woodworker to go blind, get scabs and be refused at Heaven's Gate.
Go immediately to your shed and make 3 tapered sliding dovetails in ipe with only a bent-back chisel, as penance.

A router is like a woman fond of YOU.. Treat her right and wonderful results!

Well, I never made a DVD, but I too use a router when cleaning up the sockets in my hand-cut, half-blind DTs. Best way to get a nice, clean, flat, lined up bottoms.
But my router has no plug. ;-)

ChrisI know what you mean. It is amazing how much time that saves in cleaning up the pins, and still getting to use hand tools to make the dovetails. This new video looks great. I'm impressed with Lonnie's ability to make the complicated doable. He's a very good and sound teacher. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
