If anyone is looking for a recommendation on what lathe to buy, I can recommend the new Grizzly Lathe here:
http://www.grizzly.com/products/G0462
I just got it the other day and it is quite a nice piece of machinery.
I was leery about buying from Grizzly since they look basically like Harbor Freight products, but I have to say the quality is good, the shipping was extremely fast and the price was very good compared to other lathes like it.
I’ve been turning hard maple down to legs for chairs and the lathe is very stable.
The digital readout tachometer is very handy and the speed control works very nicely.
It took me about 20 minutes to assemble the piece…it weighs 300 pounds, it doesn’t move when I turn these split pieces of sugar maple, which is unbelievable…my other lathe vibrated all over the place.
good luck,
erik.

Erik,
Ilooked hard at that lathe when it came out. My only caveat was the flimsy - at least in appearance tailstock. How does the tailstock seem in use? I'd hate to have a large bowl blank going and have the tailstock vibrate or flex.
The tailstock is nice, just as solid as the rest of the lathes in this size. I've had no issues with it, not flimsy at all.erik
Thanks for the review. The family's been wanting to make a Seattle raod trip between Xmas and New Year's, with my wife wanting to make an IKEA run.
'have been wanting to start exploring turning, and no way am I gonna get a One Way right off the bat. I've been wondering if Grizzly had a good, reasonably priced one. I can save on the $$$ shipping charge, and no sales tax in WA to Oregon residents!
Hello Erik, I was wondering if you're still as happy with the Grizzly lathe? I've been looking at this one and haven't seen any other reviews. I've got an 8" Grizzly jointer that I am very happy with.
Thanks, Kimball
Yes, I still have and use the the lathe -- a genuinely nice piece of machinery.I've since bought the steady rest and a four jaw chuck for it as well -- all good quality.
I di have an issue with the bolts that they sent for the steady rest (wrong length), but their service department worked with me and sent out the correct ones very quickly -- with apologies!
I'd agree with others that comparing Grizzly and Harbor Freight is unfair.
Honestly, if you look at Jet machines and the like, they look almost identical to Grizzly, save for the paint and label.
Good luck,erik.
"Honestly, if you look at Jet machines and the like, they look almost identical to Grizzly, save for the paint and label."They're made in the same factory, FWIW.
Thanks Erik, that's what I was hoping to hear. I've been impressed with thier quality.

I haven't look at their lathe, but based on my own experience, I would not put Grizzly in the same category as Harbor Freight. Grizzly's quality, particularly in some of their tool lines- such as the jointer- has clearly improved and rivals or exceeds that of others such as Delta, Jet or Powermatic. Grizzly often receives "Best Overall Value" in head to head comparisons in major reviews. One can attach greater or lesser significance to these, but as a rough index of quality they are useful.
On the other hand, I cannot think of anyone who believes that HF would even be reviewed, let alone be judged superior. I've bought a few items at HF, but my experience and that of many posters is more along the lines of- "it wasn't too bad considering how cheap it was".
