Hello ,does anyone know where I can get ready made handles for turning tools?I am just getting started in turning and have a lot if old (I mean old)steel tools that I want to make some of my turning tools from.I don,t have a big enough lath to turn my own as yet.Plus I don’t have any turning tools at all.I found a few sites where they will make custum handles for you,but thats not what I want.Just something cheap to get me started.Appreciate any help.

Hello,
What I would do if I was in your position is buy some 1" copper pipe and some dowel to fit inside it snugly. For the large gouges cut the dowel in lengths of about 1ft and for the more precise shaping tools I would recomend about 9 or ten inches long so that you can move it swiftly along the tool rest.Drill a hole just a bit smaller than the tang (if they are as old as you say then they may not have one) for a snug fit , but don't drill the hole to small or else the dowel will split. After you have drilled the hole, press the blade into the handle, you shouldn't be able to push it in easily, if you need to, clamp it up in between a vice.If you wanted you could shape the dowel with a rasp and then smooth it down with some fine sandpaper approx 240 grit for comfort.Cut the copper pipe to lengths of about 3/4" and slide it on the end of the handle nearer the blade and by using a nail punch and a small hammer put a little dent in it either side to keep it in place.
Hope this has helped,

Hello and thanks for the tip.I was thinking along that line, seems they don't sell just the handles,or I just can't find them if they do.Oh well thanks again.
