Need info on Craftsman planer/molder
Help!
Does anyone have information on the Craftsman planer/molder that Sears sold about twenty years ago? To my recollection they only sold one model and it was made by Foley Bellsaw. Since I don’t have it here, my information is sketchy, but I know it handles boards at least 12 inches wide, has a five hp motor, and a sheet metal cover. Maybe the motor size was optional?
I’d like to know it’s original price, what users think of its performance, and what it’s current value might be. Seems to be in good shape.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Fred
(Now I’m sorry I tore down the outhouse and threw away the old Sears catalogs!)

Seems I recall they were about $500 many years ago, not counting the motor. There was an older model that had a sheet metal bed and it was upgraded to a cast bed. Never owned one personally but have tuned a few and seen many around. Was the only thing going in it's class for many years.

Thanks, Rick.
This one has a cast iron bed. Wonder if Belsaw would still sell parts. I'll check. Any idea what the 5 hp motor might have cost twenty years ago?
Hope to hear from someone who's used one - and anyone who might have an idea on current value.

I wouldn't worry about what the motor cost 20 years ago. I gave you the link to check for parts availability. Compare prices of today as to what else would be comparable.

The belsaw was essentially a machine made from parts off the shelf. I have machines that I know parts aren't available for but it doesn't stop me from keeping them running but I've been doing it for years. The Belsaw would be a good unit for you. I see them listed for $500 to $1000.
Searches on google.com should get you some other units to compare price. Also Ebay can be useful as you can see the sold price versus the asking price.
Thanks, Rick.
I should have checked the Belsaw site before replying the last time. Have since checked it along with the others you suggested.
I have the planer/molder you are referring to. It came standard with a 2hp motor, but also was offered with a 5hp motor. I have the 5hp. I payed about $850 for it new about 20-25 years ago. I still use it. In fact, I am making all of the door molding for the house I am building, about 25 doors worth. By the way, Foley Belsaw was bought by our local (San Jose, CA) tool supplier-C B Tools. They stock spare parts, sell new machines, and have a lorge supply of cutters available. Their phone number is 408-436-0707.

Ron,
Thanks for the information. Feel like I can make a fair offer on the machine now. I was looking at it as a planer but will get the catalog for the molding cutters and check that possibility as well.

I purchased the tool described above in 1991. The listed price at that time was $382.44. (Still have the invoice).
I tested this machine after purchasing it but have never used it. I am "downsizing" and plan to sell it. I would like $200 plus shippng if anyone is interested.
