My house was built in 1925 and has pine floors with a very dark (almost black) finish which I have been told is varnish. I have a room that I need to refinish and I would like to know how to match this old type finish, and whether or not I can do something to go over the finish without sanding & etc.,. I would appreciate any help anyone could offer because right now I don’t know where to start and I’m want to keep this floor original.

Hey sand that pine first and see what you have if its heart pine go with a natural finish (no stain)you can't buy the beauty of a seasoned heart pine floor today without digging deep in your pocket. Minwax has good stain assortments if you really must stain. Minwax also has a good harwood floor cleaner if the wallets tight use that and some matching color putty on the bad spots. I'm not a minwax salesman, but I have sanded and finished pine it can get tricky. Pine tends to stain splotchy if you dont use a wood conditioner first, which is another downside to staining pine, your floor will most likely have an uneven appearance. Good luck hope it turns out well.
