I am about ready to finish a trundle bed. The head and foot boards are birds-eye maple rails and stiles and the panel are flat cherry. The long rails and corner posts are hard maple. In the past I have limited my top coats to lacquer.
My initial plan is to: sun-tan the wood for about a week, apply one thin or two thin coats of BLO/MS on the panels and maple, assemble and spray with gloss lacquer and rub out to semi-gloss final finish.
Finishing has never been my strong point but I’ve tried a number of new tasks on this bed – steam bent and laminated head and foot boards as well as working with cherry for the first time – so if there is a better finishing schedule to showcase the work then I’m open for suggestions.

Are you sure that BLO and Laquer are compatible? I've always used a 3 part finish, (1/3 BLO, 1/3 Odorless mineral spirits, 1/3 Gloss Polyurethane) wiped on, for beds that I've made. I usually do at least 2 coats. I top that with a coat of wax or two and buff it. It looks and feels great.
