Hi All,
Quick question about air compressors and nail guns. I want to do three things:
1) Build a fence for two small dogs around my yard
2) Install some crown molding and chair rail in some of the room in my house
3) Reinstall the wide plank molding around the baseboards and door in my house.
I have found two porter cable air compressor kits. One kit has a crown stapler finish nailer and the other has a brad nailer and finish nailer. Which one of these will do what I need? Do i really need a crown stapler to install crown molding or will a finish gun work? Do I need a framing gun to build the fence?
Please help. I’m totally confused.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
The crown staple is a type of staple and is not meant for crown molding. You need a brad/finish nailer for interior trim.
As far as your fence project, you would need a framing nail gun. framing nailers are expensive and if you are not planning to do construction for a living I wouldn't get one. I would suggest using a hammer and hot dip galvenized nails.
Best,
I'd go with the finish nailer / brad nailer combo. The 16 ga finish nailer will handle your interior trim needs, and the 18 ga brad nailer is nice to have for small furniture trim, edge banding, and the like. The "crown" stapler refers to the shape of the staple, not to crown molding, and I think you'd get less use from it.
For the fence project, rent a bigger nailer for a day or two.
I'd go with Kent response above.
You can rent a nailer for the fence and most yards sell the nails by the stick so you won't have to buy a 10,000 box of nails. Try and get galvanized nails for the fence.

Just for a laugh, check out this discussion in the Cafe regarding nail guns. Forgive me, I'm in a weird mood tonight.

Instead of using a framing nailer for the fence , I would recommend a siding nailer for the fence. IMO I think a framing nail is too thick and will crack your slats. For 2X4 lumber a framing nail is OK. Also if you want to nail the fence only once I would use SS nails , expensive but worth it > Good luck
