Just a lil something from a couple guys in Georgia, a Kiwi in New Zealand, and a dude in Michigan all conspiring to create a Pimped Out Plane with Abalone inlaid cap screw.

If you build it he will come.

I had no idea - Ron Brese is from New Zealand?

Nope, but the supplier of the Paua Abalone was. Ron (and rarebear that bored the screw) is from Georgia.

Thanks for the Jatoba curls picture. It really CAN be done! Amazing! I would have never believed that.
I use Jatoba all the time. I love it! However with the planes I have, I have to stick with just planing the edges.. None of my planes will do that! No matter how I sent my planes all I get is tear-out or the plane just slides over the surface like an Ice-Skate. Same with Purpleheart.
I end up using my hand scrapers!
Can you provide info on that plane in the picture?
Will
Believe it or not, I got no tearout going either with or against the grain. At least looking at either face, this piece is tough to read grain direction on so I was going both ways and I still cant tell. This plane has a very tight mouth so you can only take shavings so thick before trying to adjust much further would close the mouth. But as thick as I could in both directions - no tearout.
This is an early prototype version of what's shown here, except for the abalone that I added.

Beautiful planes! A bit out of my price class thought. Not knocking the price though. You pay for what you get! Sure wish I would have seen those Jatoba shavings about 5 years ago. I'd have order the plane in a heart beat. I had money then!
Very limited funds these days so I'll just dream of having one.
