Matt,
I’d like to make a wooden scrub plane. I would use the Hock radius edge iron assembly. How do I figure the ideal mouth opening? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Grant. I'm going to pass this question on to Gary Rogowski. He's the hand tools pro. I'm also going to ask our art director Mike Pekovich to post some advice. He's made a few of these.
Finally, take a look at our recent article on making a wooden handplane, it may help.

Thanks, Matt. Could you please check whether Gary got the forward. No replies yet, not that I'm impatient, or something.
Grant
I just moved the question over to his folder so he should be answering next time he logs on. Mike P. has also received an email asking him to post a response if he has one!
Now I'm heading off for a long weekend in N.H. with the fam. Blueberry picking here I come!

Hey Matt,
The ideal mouth opening for a scrub plane is not figured in decimal inches. It's figured in the chunk scale. What's the biggest chunk of wood you'll turn up with that scrubbing horse you're making. Cause that's what it's going to do, scrub away big hunks of wood. Don't worry about the ideal opening. Make it big. My favorite old scrub plane measures about 3/8" for an opening without the iron. With the iron there's about 3/16" open. In other words, make it big. Have fun, they're great tools even in a power tool shop. Best, Gary
